What's your favorite mountain house entree?
Which one are your favorites and which ones are your least favorite? Which ones have the most bang for the buck? So far I have tried the Beef Stroganoff, Chilli Mac, Lasagna, Chicken Teryaki, and Beef Stew. The stroganoff was probably my least favorite, while the lasagna was my favorite. They were all pretty good though. I'm looking to pick up a few cases from vitacost, but dont really want to test them out first. Just looking for opinions. The spagetti and meat sauce is pretty cheap, but the ingredients look pretty basic, is it as good as the lasagna?

The stroganoff is my favorite.
You may want to rethink trying them first. What you like and what someone else likes might be 2 different things. |

I'm going away from the mountain house foods, i just got a sample batch, they taste good, but god I feel like crap after I eat them. I guess I'm not used to all the additives since we mainly eat organic foods and the what not.
That said, I'd have to say that the vegetable lasagna was my fav. |

We keep a few cans just for emergency use... like a "gotta eat right now, so I can go fix the well while it's still light outside" kinda thing. I'd much rather just have broth, noodles, canned chicken and dehydrated veggies if I have a reliable cooking source. Also, we are sensitive to MSG here, so the autolyzed yeast extract is a detraction for us. Trying to find pre-packaged food with out MSG or HFCS is just darned near impossible. |

Pasta Primavera, Chicken Stew. I too like Beef Stroganoff.

The pork chops are my favorite. Real glad I bought a couple of cases. The Beef Stroganoff and Rice & Chicken are both excellent. My least favorites are Beef Stew and Precooked Eggs.

+1 pork chops...we have eaten 20 year-old FD chops...they were a little chewy but very tasty.

Has anyone opened a can of ground beef? |
Re: What's your favorite mountain house entree?
We have not tried them all. Spaghetti was our fave, lasagne second. We consider them prep fast food and trash not to be eaten often. As posted above, not very good, gassy, full of additives, but fast like a big mac which is nasty for health too.
We knew we detested powdered eggs and did not try the breakfast stuff. The stroganoff was ok, but super gas producing. |
Re: What's your favorite mountain house entree?
I tried the chicken and noodles again last night. It came out a lot better with less water. (With too much water it was about the same as Ramen noodles with some chicken.) Still I doubt i'll order any more. In fact I doubt i'll order any more mountain house meals since I dont think they are worth the space they take up. With 9 cups of mix in a 13 cup can they are practically half air and what little food is in them isn't particularly filling. They seem to be more of a side dish then anything. I was buying the individual packs from vitacost to sample them but I guess it turns out the #10 cans actually cost more per ounce of food! I should have done the math because I assumed I was getting a better price with the big cans. Oops. I also assumed the cans would be full. I could live with the high price since it doesn't need rotated, but using up 30% of my limited storage space to store air is the deal killer for me. I think i'll stick to home canned meals for convenience food.

Re: What's your favorite mountain house entree?
I bought most of mine in a group buy and got it at wholesale pricing. So I'm getting more bang for the buck. That group buy has since been shut down.
The last #10 can I opened was Beef Stroganoff. I added a small can of corn to each meal. I thought it was quite filling and delicious. What I like about the product: light weight. In case of a fire or other bugout situation, I can move a lot of food on a 2 wheel dolly in a hurry. Regular food will be left behind. Having been all over the Internet and reading about spoiled food because people didn't pack it right, I don't have to worry about that problem. The product will outlast me. But I stock other types of food especially canned food. As a matter of fact I'm about to go to Walmart for a few more cases. I'll check on ammo also. |
